4-Day Sapporo Itinerary: The Best Things to Do in Hokkaido’s Winter Wonderland

Sapporo, Japan is the ultimate winter getaway, offering stunning snowy landscapes, rich cultural experiences, and some of the best food in Japan. If you’re visiting for four days, this itinerary can cover everything—from indulging in world-famous chocolates to adrenaline-pumping snow activities. Here’s how to make the most of your trip!

Day 1: Arrival in Sapporo + Cozy Dinner

Manila to Sapporo: A Winter Escape Begins

The journey from Manila to Sapporo usually involves a connecting flight via Tokyo or another major city. But luckily, Cebu Pacific now offers a direct flight from Manila to Sapporo. But remember to always book months in advance. It was the peak season when we booked our flights, so we already expected the expensive air fare.

Upon your arrival at New Chitose Airport, you can take the JR Rapid Airport Train (about 40 minutes) to Sapporo Station, where your adventure begins!

Dinner at Sapporo Beer Garden

After settling in, kick off your trip with a warm and hearty dinner at Sapporo Beer Garden. Known for its famous Genghis Khan (Jingisukan) lamb BBQ, this spot is a great way to enjoy local flavors while sipping on Sapporo’s iconic drinks. Sapporo Beer Museum is also one of the best place to unwind and learn about the history of Japan’s oldest beer brand and enjoy a tasting session!

Day 2: Royce Chocolate, Otaru’s Romantic Canals & Seafood Feasts

Spend at least 3 hours here, that includes your chocolate shopping.

Start your day on a sweet note with a visit to Royce’ Chocolate Town, a dream destination for chocolate lovers. Here, you can learn about the chocolate-making process and of course try exclusive Royce products, and even craft your own chocolates.

Afternoon & Evening: Otaru – A Picture-Perfect Canal Town

Best to arrive early in Otaru for most establishment closes at 6pm.

For lunch, hop on a train to Otaru, a charming town known for its glassware, music boxes, and fresh seafood. If possible, spend a whole day here, as a half-day might feel too short! Also, start early for most of the stores closes at 6pm.

🏙 Things to Do in Otaru:

✅ Sushi & Seafood – Enjoy your brunch with fresh sushi and crabs at Otaru Sankaku Market.
✅ Otaru Canal – Stroll along the historic canal, best enjoyed in the evening when the gas lamps illuminate the town.
✅ Sakaimachi Street – A must-visit for artisanal sweets, glassware, and souvenirs.
✅ LeTAO – Try Otaru’s famous double fromage cheesecake!

Day 3: Snowmobile Adventure, Soup Curry, & Sledding Fun

By lunch, you can go back at the city center and then warm up with a bowl of Sapporo’s famous soup curry at Suage, one of the best spots in town. Try the crispy chicken leg or Hokkaido pork belly, paired with spice levels of your choice or might as well have it all in one bowl.

Afternoon: Sledding at Moerenuma Park

Equipment rental in Moeruma Park closes at 4pm. So better do this earlier.

For some laid-back winter fun, head to Moerenuma Park and enjoy sledding down its gentle slopes. Priced for only 500 yen, you can do sledding up until 4 in the afternoon. This beautiful park, designed by renowned architect Isamu Noguchi, is also a great spot for stunning winter photography.

📍 How to Get There: About 40 minutes from Sapporo Station via bus or taxi.

Day 4: Skiing & A Night View from Mt. Moiwa

If you are a beginner, attending the ski lessons would be the best thing to do.

Sapporo is home to some of the best ski resorts, and Mt. Teine is the perfect spot for both beginners and advanced skiers. Spend the morning skiing or snowboarding on powdery slopes with breathtaking views of Sapporo.

⏰ Rental & Lift Pass: Available at the resort. But if you’ll get the lesson, everything would be prepared.

Evening: Sunset & Night Views from Mt. Moiwa Ropeway

End your trip with a breathtaking night view of Sapporo from Mt. Moiwa Ropeway. Take the cable car up to the observation deck and enjoy a panoramic view of the city lights—one of Japan’s top night views!

Day 5: Back to Manila

After an unforgettable winter adventure, it’s time to head back to Manila. If you have time before your flight, grab some last-minute souvenirs at Tanukikoji Shopping Street or a quick bowl of Hokkaido ramen at Ramen Shingen before heading to the airport.
