Since its debut in 2018, the Earth + Lens photo exhibit has consistently captivated audiences with its compelling imagery and strong environmental message.
The 2024 exhibit, launched on August 20 at the Hyundai Hall, National Museum of Natural History, is larger and more impactful than ever. It has garnered support from key organizations and aims to bring the wonders of nature to an even wider audience.
Organized by the Manila Bulletin (MB) in collaboration with HUAWEI, the Department of Tourism (DOT), and new partners like the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) and the National Museum of the Philippines, this year’s exhibit continues the tradition of celebrating the majesty of Philippine nature. The theme focuses on the harmonious movement of life forms within their natural landscapes, captured by talented partner photographers.
The ceremonial opening featured the unveiling of the main event posters, with notable figures including Dr. Emilio C. Yap III, President of the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation; Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma Jr., Publisher of the Manila Bulletin; Luca Li, HUAWEI Smartphone GTM Manager; Rene S. Napeñas, NCCA Head of Public Affairs and Information Office; and Jorell M. Legaspi, Deputy Director-General for Museums of the National Museum of the Philippines.
In his speech, Secretary Coloma emphasized the exhibit’s mission to reach as many Filipinos as possible, underscoring the importance of making these images accessible to a broad audience. “The National Museum regularly attracts visitors interested in our country’s history and cultural heritage. Our goal is to broaden their vision and knowledge of what makes our nation great by sharing these images with as many Filipinos as possible,” he stated.
A special highlight of the event was the participation of partner photographers Silver Belen, Noel Pabalate, and Jan Mayo, who shared their experiences using the HUAWEI Pura 70 series smartphones. They showcased how the advanced features of the Pura 70 series, like the Telephoto Macro Shot and Portrait Shot, allowed them to capture the intricate beauty of the great outdoors in stunning detail.
“I aimed to capture the incredible landscapes and life forms that define the Philippines, but the clarity and versatility of the HUAWEI Pura 70 series helped me capture moments that speak volumes about our commitment to preserving nature. It’s an honor to share these images and inspire others to protect our environment,”
said Jan Mayo, a new partner photographer this year.
Silver Belen highlighted his favorite feature of the HUAWEI phone, saying, “With every click of the shutter, I strive to showcase the delicate balance between life forms and their natural surroundings. The advanced features of the HUAWEI Pura 70 series enabled me to capture these moments in stunning detail and appreciate the wonders of our environment up close.”
The exhibit features photographs printed on fabric canvas using eco-solvent ink, offering a fresh perspective on lesser-explored tourist destinations in the Philippines, including Quezon City, Bohol, Leyte, Ifugao, Batanes, and South Cotabato. The breathtaking landscapes, detailed close-ups of flora and fauna, and dynamic portrayals of natural ecosystems provide visitors with a unique learning experience, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation.
The Earth + Lens photo exhibit is open to the public until September 1, 2024, at the Hyundai Hall, National Museum of Natural History.
