I was supposed to go to Siargao a few days before the holiday but because of priorities, I decided to stay here in Manila instead. After all I felt that I can always go to that place anytime next year as long as my schedule permits it.
Priorities in life gives us that strong hold on to doing what we truly loved or wanted. I guess this was one of the messages I’ve learn from the latest Metro Manila Film Festival (#MMFF2017) entry entitled ‘SIARGAO’.
We pick the ones we really want to prioritize in life giving us a new direction. But when we start to change things it will give u a different path.
Aside from this message and a showcase of what the island has to offer, “SIARGAO” features 3 different characters who is either trying to get away, letting go and coming home.
The movie revolves around the character of the 32-year old high-profile musician DIEGO PUNZALAN who is on the verge of quitting his band and took a trip back to his province Siargao to take a break from Manila’s public eye and rethink his place in his band.
On his travel back, he meets 29-year old perky but sassy fashion and beauty vlogger LAURA MOLINA, who embarked on a solo trip to nurse her broken heart and challenge her fear of risks and independence. As Diego challenges Laura to step out of her boundaries as they explore the places he once called home. Diego also needs to face the issues he left behind, including seeing ABI WILLIAMS, his Fil-Australian 27 year old former flame, the muse of many of his older love songs, one he shared a deep and heartbreaking history with.
It was an unlikely triangle of Diego, Laura, and Abi who crosses path in the island of Siargao. Where the tides change quickly and the ocean never stays still, they learn to take chances, and learn that, perhaps, commitment might be the biggest risk they will ever have to make.
The movie starred Jericho Rosales, Erich Gonzales, Jasmine Curtis-Smith with Luke Landrigan, Wil Dasovich, Mica Javier, Roxanne Barcelo, Will Devaughn, Suzette Ranillo and Leon Miguel. It was nice to see that most of the cast in this movie are either acquaintances and/or I personally know.
Echo gave an outstanding acting as always. I actually felt that the movie is either created or written specifically for him for it really suits his personality.
Erich Gonzales was very relatable specially that I am aware of what she does in the movie. Funny that I was seeing a friend of mine (Rhea Bue) in her acting in the film as a Vlogger.
On the other hand, I really appreciated Jasmine Curtis in this film. I admire her already when I saw her at the movie “I’m drunk I love you” but her character in this movie shows her vulnerability as an actress. I like her rawness in this film that she reminds me of a younger version of ‘Izza Calzado’.
The whole movie was aesthetically good. Partly, I felt the need to visit this place after watching the film. Though there was a portion that I felt slow paced, it was covered up by nice dialogues and straightforwardness of the film. It felt like I was watching a friend’s story to unfold.
Should I recommend you to watch the film- If you love to see lovely sceneries, if you enjoy surfing, and/or a fan of either Jericho, Erich or Jasmine, I would highly recommend you to watch this MMFF entry.
SIARGAO is an official entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival 2017, opens December 25. The film is produced by Mark Viktor and the director himself Paul Soriano, released by Ten17p and is distributed by Solar Philippines.
