✪ One of the joys of college is having a great set of friends. My group would spend hours and hours playing computer games at the local computer store. Counterstrike, Half-life, Starcraft (Brood Wars back then) – all brought out the competitive side in us, with colourful language hurled occasionally across the room- all in the spirit of good fun, of course.
The recently held Mercs Tournament brought back pleasant memories.
GameX MERCS FINAL TOURNAMENT was held at Cyberzone SM North EDSA a few weeks ago (May 9, 2014). The long awaited event was managed by MASSIVE GAMING (massive.ph) in partnership with GAMEX, SMART COMMUNICATIONS (gamex.ph). Massive Gaming is a young online game publisher in the Philippines with several games in its roster. Two of the games are Mercenary Online and WarRock.
MERCENARY ONLINE (mercs.ph), is the first premiere Third Person Shooter online game in the Philippines. WARROCK (warrock.ph) is also the country’s first, First Person Shooter game.
The GameX Mercs tournament was a nine-month long tournament with over 500 professional and 2, 500 amateur teams participating. Combatants from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao were whittled down to fifteen teams for Mercenary Online while only sixteen survived for the WarRock finale. These finalists raged live, on-stage amidst the roar of a thousand screaming fans.
With 300,000 php in cash, merchandise and in-game items courtesy of STeel Series at stake, I’d be screaming too.
The Queen of Cosplay and true gamer Alodia Gosiengfiao was the special guest of that day. Not only did gamers get a chance to meet her, they also got the opportunity join her TEAM ALODIA to battle it out during a very entertaining exhibition match versus our GM MASSIVE TEAM. I actually had as well the opportunity to have her cornered along with some other bloggers at the back stage.
The GameX MERCENARY ONLINE tournament was finalized with the 3rd placer (PHP 30,000.00) being ANBU from Paranaque City and the 2nd place (PHP 70,000.00) also the strong [A]NBU from Quezon City who were previous top placers in our previous nationwide tournament. Finally our champion and winner of the PHP 100,000 cash prize was an upstart clan, Relevant from Pasig who was a relative a tournament newbie however finished very strong beating [A]NBU at a 7 – 0 score.
The WARROCK NATIONALS 2014 tournament, ended with the 4th place (PHP 4,000.00) Soldados Handsom and the way from Bicol and Locusts Handsomes from Rizal winning the 3rd place slot (PHP 15,000.00) at a 5 – 9 win. Finally the 1st place Supreme Champion (PHP 30,000.00), Locusts Inspired from Metro Manila wins versus Hostility Cebu from Bacolod at a final score of 9 – 3 earning them the 2nd place (PHP 20,000.00) slot. The Clan Locusts truly dominated this tournament with 2 of out their 5 participating teams placing!
