Fully Booked could be consider as a haven for book enthusiasts who may browse endlessly through the store’s stylish interiors to find selections that appeal to their unique, individual lifestyle. You can actually feel how Fully Booked have merge that graphic with chic feel which brews inspiration to every visitors.

Going back to the story, I browse the internet to find out who was she or maybe who’s the person behind this painted books. On my quest to find the answer, I learned about this guy, named Mike Stilkey, who is a Los Angeles based artist who came here in the Philippines to install his 24-foot high book sculpture in Fully Booked, Bonifacio High Street.

The sculpture which is entitled “Discarded Romance,” actually almost reaches the ceiling and consists of approximately 3000 discarded books.

At far, you’ll actually think that maybe he just used different shape like books or boxes and make it look like a book, but looking closely you’ll see that this are real books stack together, painted and created a wonderful image. In this piece of work by Stilkey, you will see that the books with more colourful covers are placed around the painted figure, which is painted on the books with dark-colored covers.

Art x Book x Me

According to an interview of Stilkey, his biggest challenge was actually dealing with the texture and the gap between books, having each book takes paint differently. Stilkey actually uses a mix of  ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer to draw his visual narratives.

Now going back to my question, Who is she? Well I still actually don’t know. According to Stilkey, he works  as spontaneously as he can and doesn’t even plan what the image is until after he finished stacking all the books. But I do know that most of us agree that this is a stunner, maybe we can just give her a name perhaps, “Matilda” or “Esmeralda” or “Criselda” perhaps. Or maybe we could try to asked Mike Stilkey the next time he pays a visit. ヅ
