So it happens again. The ever-so familiar explosion of Krypton will fill the universe once more with dread, as beings from this planet will reach Earth and spread evil and chaos. Good thing there’s one Kryptonian on our side … the MAN OF STEEL (Superman Trailer).
At least this is how I remember the story of Superman way way back. This was in the 1980s, and I was a toddler then. I recall being amazed by the effects — how Superman can fly and shoot laser beams and lift heavy debris. During playtime, I would even don a red cape and run around pretending I was flying. It was my childhood dream to be like him.
That is why when I was offered a VIP pass for the launching of the Man of Steel: Defender of Earth exhibit at the SM Mall of Asia last June 7, 2013, headed by the Pacific Licensing Studio, I did not hesitate. Maybe this time, I would get to wear my red cape again.
Upon entering the exhibit floor, after my registration, I felt a different vibe. It wasn’t the Superman I used to know. The design was more serious — sort of an alien-invasion, independence-day, war-of-the-world-type setting.
There’s even a spaceship towering high in the middle of the area. Surrounding it are collectible items that probably cost a fortune, gaming areas, and a limited edition Axis wristwatch, in which, according to my sources, there are only 300 items available. The watch is being sold on a regular price at around Php 12,000, but is being given with a discounted special rate of Php 7,290 in the gallery.
Aside from the displays, the launch also showcased a superman cosplayer who are always swarmed by photographers and Herbert Chavez, a Superman fan who had plastic surgery to mimick the appearance of Clark Kent.
The highlight of the event happened when the program started with the Man of Steel trailer. After that, the Philippine All Stars dance group grooved their way to entertain the crowd, and then the Penshoppe models strutted on the runway to flaunt their cool Superman clothing line. Azrael Coladilla of Toycon Philippines invited the audience to attend the 12th ToyCon Philippines happening on June 15 to 17, 2013.
It didn’t end there. The organizers gave away four limited edition Superman Axis watches and a DeVant LCD TV. Too bad I didn’t win in the raffle. Just my luck!
Overall, it was a successful short event.
I can’t wait to watch the movie and see how this reboot would compare with the others. Based on the trailer, I’m sensing there would be a more serious tone to it. Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe as Clark Kent’s biological father, Kevin Costner as Jonathen Kent, and Diane Lane as Marthe Kent. This is directed by Zack Synder and produced by Christopher Nolan.
