I still cannot contain my emotion after watching Disney’s ‘The Newsies’ last week. I may have came at the venue ignorant about the play, but still I end up feeling ecstatically happy about what I’ve just seen. From the choreography to the actors, singers and dancers up to the simple yet changing visuals, The Newsies is definitely going to the list of one of the best musical plays I’ve watch this year.
Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right.
The Philippine version stars Gian Magdangal as Jack Kelly, Danielle Chopin plays Katherine Plumber, Jef Flores plays Davey with his yonger brother ‘Les’ played by Daniel Drilon and Tory Cortez. Also includes Luis Marcelo, Pinky Marquez, Raymund Concepcion, Franz Imperial, Ian Ocampo and Alex Diaz to name a few.
Disney’s Newsies is a production of Globe Live & 9 Works Theatrical. You still got a chance to watch this on the remaining weekends of July. The Newsies is staged at the Globe Iconic Store Bonifacio High Street Amphitheater, Bonifacio Global City on July 7-9, 14-16, 21-23 & 28-30, 2017 at 8:00pm.
