Day one of our trip in Yogyakarta introduces us to their way of living by letting us tour the village and see the culture and history through their dances.
From our early flight coming from Jakarta, we arrived at Yogya (also pronounced as Jogja) around 9 in the morning and head straight to one of the popular local restaurant called Gudeg Yu Djum. Here they serve a standard Nasi Gudeg which is a combination Gudeg, Kerecek and Boiled Egg which you can upgrade by adding chicken feet or neck. Did I like it? After the light brunch, we head straight to a coffee and furniture store called Epic Coffee. As Brunei Food Blogger Thanis Lim (www.thanislim.com) describes it “ hipster coffee shop”, this coffee shops could be the perfect place for instagram worthy posts. But the good food didn’t end there for after having a quick brunch and coffee, we headed straight to a village nearby Borobudur temple to check out a traditional Javanese dance called Jathilan while we enjoy our “real” lunch! Bon appetite!

Mangut Lele (Fried Catfish in Javanese Style Curry Sauce)
Mie Oseng Cabe Hijau (Stir fry Noodle and Green Chili)
Oseng Daun Pepaya (Stir Fry Papaya Leaves)

I was totally enjoying everything for I felt that it was the first (real) meal for me in that day. The food serve was perfect for pescetarian. No to dieting at the moment for I think I did refill my plate three times. #teehee

Now, time to watch some dance moves.
Javanese Dance Performance
Jathilan is a traditional folk art of dance group and performed by several male dancers. It is known to be one of the oldest dance forms in Java. If you watch it, you would definitely notice that it is not just a very dynamic dance but instead a stage drama about soldiers heading to a war. I wonder how long did it take for them to put on the makeup and wear the intricate costumes.
Jia Qin from Singapore is totally enjoying it!
Trivia! Jathilan developed in some regions such as East Java, Central Java and here in Yogyakarta. Each region displays different version. This dance can be displayed anywhere like weddings, circumcision, party or art festivals.
